Check Every Comment

One of the things I like best about WordPress is the scum and filth they keep from ever appearing on my blog. But the scammers out there get better and better.

Check every comment. Check where it is coming from. Check closely – some at first appear to be blogs, but they are really all about marketing / selling. They are getting clever – the comment appears to be pertinent, or flattering (example: great blog and great content!) but if their blog is really just a sales tool, you can (in WordPress) go into EDIT on the comment, and eliminate the url entry, and then you have this sweet comment but there is NO connection with this person’s so-called blog.

Here’s what to look for. A blog may look like a medical information blog, for example, but just underneath the entry (which is copied from someone else’s blog!) you will find a list of 10+ url sites that have little or nothing to do with medical information. Like “click here for a bargain on leather luggage” and more irrelevant entries.

Be aware!

  1. i know what u mean, i get anywhere between 30 – 100 per day, its very annoying. The problem is that some of them are genuine bloggers so i have to always skim through for the proper comments which can be a pain sometimes

  2. The really nasty ones WordPress seems to catch, but suddenly I am being bombarded by these . . . marketers. What they are selling isn’t filth; I just don’t want them marketing on my blog!

I think you are very good at keeping trash off, Fonz! 🙂

  3. Of the ones I get, the porn ones are (appropriately enough) the most crude and hence the easiest to spot.

The targeted ones are more difficult. After the ‘baby burrito’ post I got a number of spams from a sleep sack company, which briefly responded to my post and then talked about how hygienic, natural, and sweet sleep sacks were. the comment ended with a link to the company in question.

I agree: I like what the company sells, but my blog isn’t a site for them to advertise!

  4. Yes I have dozens of those a day and my spammer picks most of them, but some come through especially if i have a post with ‘kuwait’ in the title for some reason

a lot of porn (and i mean ALL kinds of porn – every imaginable fetish name you can think of – some of the title would make a streetwalker blush…), a lot of casino/gambling stuff, a lot of house hygiene crap

but i still have to look through the garbage in my spam folder because sometimes genuine bloggers are sent there for some reason
