99.7 Buck Naked and Yemeni Star

I’m back in the project room, no TV and for some reason my radio isn’t bringing in BBC so I am listening to 99.7, with which I have a love/hate relationship.

I could swear I have heard the same exact sound track a year ago. I’m pretty sure music has moved on, and occasionally I will hear something dating within the last three months, but a lot of the music seems pretty old to me.

There is one thing that really bugs me. There is a song in which there is a line that includes the words “buck naked banging on the bathroom floor.” The censors have evidently decided that “buck” is a BAD word because while you are listening to the song, what you hear is something like “there we were _______ naked banging on the bathroom floor.” When I hear it, it cracks me up, but at the same time, how annoying!

(Buck naked is another way of saying bare naked: bare-na·ked (bârnkd, -nkd)
adv. & adj. Chiefly Northern U.S. With no clothes on.

Regional Note: The chiefly Northern U.S. expression bare-naked illustrates the linguistic process of redundancy, not always acceptable in Standard English but productive in regional dialect speech. A redundant expression combines two words that mean the same thing, thereby intensifying the effect. The expression buck-naked, used chiefly in the South Atlantic and Gulf states, is not as clear as bare-naked with respect to its origin; buck is possibly an alteration of butt, “buttocks.” If so, bum-naked, heard in various parts of the country, and bare-ass(ed), attested especially in the Northeastern U.S., represent the same idea.

From The Free Dictionary)

My husband listens to 99.7 (I think it calls itself Radio Kuwait) during drive time in the morning, and said that the other day they talked with the meteorologist at the Kuwait airport, who gave the weather forecast but then went into a long thing about which stars are visible, and how back in the not-so-distant past the desert Kuwaitis would watch for this star to appear, because they knew it preceded the cooling temperatures. They called it the “Yemeni star.” I think my husband told me why, but I can’t remember.

How totally cool. You keep your ears open, and even on 99.7 you can learn something.

  1. Ah the Superstation!

    *disgusted*

It’s the worst radio station ever and it houses the most annoyingly disturbing presenters as well.

  2. 99.7 RKFM never stops to amaze me. As much as it really sucks, it’s the best-of-all radio stations in Kuwait.

    @ Kinan
Linda from the Breakfast Show is quite good.

  3. lol the two comments above me should be combined to reflect the truth about 99.7:

” its the worst radio station ever, but its the best of all radio stations in kuwait”

    hehehe 😛

i prefer the music on VOA 96.8 FM i think. and the BBC station now on 100.1 FM or there abouts.

and yeah everytime i hear that song it cracks me up. i’m pretty sure the dj’s still play it just because of that line 😛

  4. i have a hate/hate relationiship with 99.7 🙂
i think “banging” was more inapropriate than buck naked,, and dooont get me started on the presenters !! this is what you get when there is no compitition ,, as are most of the services over here …
you know what crackes me up ? its when they put on green day’s American idiot they sensor “american” ,,, so that our american comrades/compadres/brothers dont get offended i guess. yet it is an american song , but what do i know !

I hate her the most! She’s most absurdest laughing at her own ridiculous jokes.

    Abdulaziz:
Yes! American Idiot drives me nuts when they air it. I love that song and they just butcher it completely. Ridiculous insects 😛

  6. You guys are all just totally cracking me up. The one station I hate is VOA – it’s so dry, it’s so amateur, and it is not the way we really speak ENGLISH! When BBC interviews Americans, you hear REAL American English, but VOA drives me totally crazy. I can’t listen to it.

99.7 is . . . . quirky. Yeh, it can be annoying, and then again it can be fun. Some of the oldies, I love . . . the one like “smile for me baby, let me see your grill” is old, but so funny!

Abdulaziz, you caught the one thing I found the most funny – censoring the wrong word!!!! Censor naked! Censor banging! But censoring buck just doesn’t make sense, and I can’t help it, it cracks me up. Anytime censors get involved, though, things get kind of Alice-in-Wonderland, don’t they?

I don’t think I know the song American Idiot! Guess I am WAAAAAyyyyyyy behind, and as I said, normally it is BBC for me, but when I can’t get it – 99.7.

Have you even heard Vicky or Dr. Laboush?? <– Is that even a freakin’ name to broadcast?

If Linda’s absurd then what are they?

  10. Oh, I hate that song. I can’t stand that the singer has NO remorse for what he has done (cheat on his girlfriend) – he’s only sorry that he was caught. Too funny about the goofy censorship!

I love the explanation of why “redundant expressions” are productive. Buck-naked is such a useful way to convey that someone was REALLY naked – or naked in a setting that normally required clothing. You wouldn’t say, “I was buck-naked in the shower”, for example – but you would say “I got off the subway at 79th street and there was a man sitting buck-naked on the platform.” (Not, happily, that this has happened to me. :P)

  11. The one I hate worse is this smarmy song about “it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do” they sing to the woman they are leaving, trying hard not to cry (oh I am such a victim) because they are already committed – i.e. MARRIED – to someone else. Oh please! Spare me!

Like if you’re going to be a total cad, have the decency to be cadlike, and not to expect the one you’re walking away from to feel sorry for YOU. !!!!

    Dogs!

  12. Hi … totally agree with you.

99.7 FM superstition Radio Kuwait 😉

Well that Star is called (Sohail) it is a Yemeni Star because it holds its place on the southern sphere’s sky. so it is to the Yemen side for Kuwait and other GCC countries. on the opposite side there is the (Thoraia – Star) to the northwest of our Sky and that was mentioned together in some poetries as the lovers that will never meet with each others.
