Doha Changes

As well as the bulldozers razing entire areas, there are smaller changes taking place in Doha. A supermarket, The Q-Mart, open the first time I was living in Doha, and still open when I got here, has closed – for good – as the guard told us when we went to buy some produce. Q-Mart always had the best produce.

And when I went to show some visiting friends the Esphahan, the Iranian restaurant down at the Souq al Waqif, the door was closed tight and this sign was on the door:

  2. That’s kind of scary. Think about seeing that sign the day AFTER you’d eaten there!

  3. Warning signs like this in black and white is not as effective as the Ones we have here in Q8 in red and white stating THIS SHOP IS CLOSED BY ORDER OF THE BALADEYAH (MUNICIPALITY) .It makes you feel that a crime has been committed . They usually show some photo shots of the offending restaurants violations such as the restaurant which was using adjacent rest room to prepare Hummus in it . Talk about lack of conscious. Gross

  5. lol @ Bu Yousef’s comment 😀
But seriously strict inspections like this is what makes eating out in the Middle East so safe compared to the rest of Asia.

  6. Little Diamond – Usually they close them for a month. I understand the higher level establishments are often closed for expired items on their shelves, even if the items have never been opened of used – it gets their attention. And the best time to eat there is just after they have re-opened! It will probably never be cleaner/ fresher, etc!

BitJockey – Believe me, I have eaten in places that would curl your hair. What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger!

LLOOLL, Daggero, I can see the crime-scene tape up now! 🙂

  7. Bu Yousef! Yuuuuuuucccccckkkkkk!

Mathai – I agree. It makes me feel minimally more secure knowing there are some standards, and that those standards are being enforced. I remember that the Kuwait Times often had photos of the inspectors with thermometers and such. 🙂
