Happy Birthday Cakes

Today I have been blogging for six years.

This gorgeous cake is from cakeguru.com

So much has changed. Six years ago, I was newly arrived in Kuwait. Kuwait had a vibrant and quickly changing blogging scene; even before we moved to Kuwait I had followed the blogs. Some came and went quickly, and a few very good ones are still in existence. Some other very good bloggers have also dropped off the scene.

Blogging is different now. Time is scarce, topics in Pensacola are far less exotic that sights and sounds and smells and celebrations in the Gulf.

I keep blogging because of my friends. I sent off a quilt to one of my first blogging friends the other day, to welcome her first little baby boy. Another friend wrote “I keep up with you through your blog, but that’s not really fair to you if I don’t comment.” I have a friend in Syria whose safety I am praying for. I think of all my friends in Kuwait who appreciated my daily sunrise photo, and what fun it was for me to look at StatCounter and see all the Kuwaiti students at university who would look to see what Kuwait looks like “this” morning. It’s fun for me. One of the reasons I started blogging still holds true – there is so much every day stuff I forget if I don’t write it down. This is my record.

The other part of what keeps me blogging is what I learn from you. This world is full of wonderful and amazing things, and so many things I didn’t even know I didn’t know, I have learned from you, my readers.

Here’s something that hasn’t changed: I still love over-the-top cakes. No, not eating them, just admiring them. So in honor of six years of blogging, I have selected cakes to please every taste. Enjoy!

And especially for AdventureMan, another cake from cakeguru.com :

  4. GreY – It’s had its ups and downs, hasn’t it? I remember in Kuwait, there would be like thirty new blogs every day, and thirty going inactive. And in those six years, you have married! And become a father! And are fighting a life-threatening challenge! You’ve had six years worthy of a super-hero 🙂

Wildramp – fortunately, they are only good for virtual eating 🙂

Desert Girl – I read you and Jewaira before ever going to Kuwait. You made Kuwait sound like such a great adventure! I still follow your adventures 🙂 I have some special non-sugar virtual desserts for all my Kuwait friends who are a little insulin-challenged, and there are a LOT of them, you are in good company. 😦 Thank you for coming by 🙂

  8. Some of those cakes would make good quilts! I too am glad you are still blogging–makes me feel like you are next door.

  9. I feel the same way, Momcat. Remember how lonely it was when you were first stationed overseas? We had (expensive) telephones, but no mobile phones, no Skype or Vonage, no instant communication with loved ones and friends. The new tools of communication are such a blessing. And yes, it is a lot like living next door. 🙂

The cakes have good palattes, don’t they? After I read your comment, I took another look, and I think I have made quilts in just about every one of the palates, and I have long thought about a white on white quilt . . . You have sharp intuitive skills!

Thank you for being so tolerant of many comments that may not be acceptable byother bloggers , but you took them in stride and you held your own .

Greetings to AdventureMan your silent partner , Whom i remember made one comment only on your blog since its inception till now.

Soon you will pass another major mile stone in your blog. So an early congratulation on that one as well.

Keep up the good work , and God Bless

  12. LOL, I knew that was you, BL. Kuwait Sommeliers Society; you crack me up. Yeh, no, I don’t twit. There are days I barely eke out a blog. And then there are the days that the ideas overflow. Thanks for being a regular, and for commenting, it matters.

Daggero! You are sharp! I haven’t said anything about the milestone, but I am figuring maybe December. . . AdventureMan comments to me in private, and he tells me he ALWAYS looks for his name. 🙂 As for differences of opinion – you grew up in a family, right? Sometimes people aren’t always nice. There are even a few comments I have left in, just taken out some of the more offensive expletives. I don’t mind differences. My commenters have often given me something to think about, and sometimes even I come away with a different perspective – isn’t that a good thing? Isn’t that what our human journey is all about, God willing? I know you and I have had different points of view, but I am glad we are still virtual friends. 🙂 You are a blessing to this blog.
