What Happened with Categories, WordPress?

Two days ago I noticed that my categories are no longer showing, so I went into admin and changed it back, so that they are showing. The next day it was back to this “a” and a box you have to drop down to find the categories.

It’s not that I mind the box – if I had chosen the box. I chose to have my categories showing. You gave me that option. What? So now you are taking it away and you didn’t even give me any warning? You appear to give me the option on my Admin page, but I really don’t have the option? What is going on?

I know it’s not just me – I see it on a couple other WordPress blogs I visit.

Sparkle and Talk Like a Pirate Day

In my e-mail this morning are two notes from my sister, Sparkle. Sparkle is a very special woman who, with her husband, Mariner Man, takes in damaged animals. Some have been abandoned or neglected, some have been physically hurt. They had a great big husky who had been lost or abandoned and hit by a car, one of the nicest dogs you could ever meet. They have a diabetic cat with a damaged leg, and several emotionally disturbed cats whom they nurse and teach to trust in goodness and kindness once again. Their newest dog keeps us in stitches – she is young and just learning about the larger world. Life is sweet when you are walking this dog!

Sparkle is also very very funny. She wants me to know that Friday, tomorrow, is the annual Talk Like a Pirate Day. You can learn more about Talk Like a Pirate Day from this WordPress Blog.

Here is a very abbreviated list of words from the website, in case you want to Talk Like a Pirate:

Aaaarrrrgggghhhh! – exhortation of discontent or disgust
Ahoy! – Hello!
Ahoy, Matey – Hello, my friend!
Ahoy, me Hearties! – the same as saying “Hello, my friends!”
All hand hoay! – comparable to all hands on deck
Avast ye – stop and check this out or pay attention
Aye – yes
Batten down the hatches – put everything away on the ship and tie everything down because a storm is brewing
Bilge-sucking – insult
Blimey! – exhortation of surprise
Blow me down! – expression of shock of disbelief akin to “Holy Crap!”
Blow the man down – command to kill someone
Booty – treasure
Buccaneer – a pirate
Bucko – a buccaneer
Cat O’Nine Tails – a whip with nine strands
Corsair – pirates in the Mediterranean Sea
Crow’s nest – small platform atop the mast where the lookout stands

Keeps Me Humble

The very few people who know that I blog sometimes ask me “How do you get such high statistics?”

The simple truth is, my very highest attracting post, even one year later, gets the most hits. It isn’t about the content, it’s about the birthday cake photo. How humbling is that?

WordPress allows us to look at our posts in terms of the last seven days, the last 30 days, the last quarter, the last year and all time. Because I love statistics and trends, and what numbers can tell us and how they can mislead us, I love it that WordPress has added all these features. (They have also added technical features that outstrip my abilities and my desire. I want to keep it simple – just writing on some days can be hard enough for me.)

So here is a look at my all time high scoring articles:

WordPress Sitcky Posts

WordPress announced a very cool innovation – the ability to place a post at the top of your blog and keep it there until you decide otherwise. Called Sticky Posts, as you write a new post, you see in the publish status box a new option that says “stitck this post to the front page.”

If you check the box, the post you write stays at the top of the page, first thing your visitors see. When you no longer care to have it featured, you unclick it, and save – and it goes to the chronological place where it belongs.

So easy, so practical, so much fun. Cool.

New Improved Image Uploader at WordPress

New today from WordPress:

The Image Uploader — Now With Captions

WordPress bloggers love to share their photos and images with each other, so perhaps it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that when we removed the boring, old image icon that you wrote to us lamenting its disappearance.

But if you haven’t noticed already, there’s nothing to fear, for in its place is the Add an Image button in the Media Toolbar, which has been around for a bit but is now more robust than ever — making it the only thing you’ll need to add and organize photos.

Among its newest features is an easy-to-add caption tool. Just write your caption in the caption field before inserting an image and, voila, the caption displays below the photo inside a tasteful frame.

What I like best is the ability to resize and work with the photo right in the upload process, instead of having the photo WP ready to start with.

You can read the entire article here, in the WordPress News.

Stealing my Stuff

I looked down at the section of my WordPress admin page where it shows people who have connected, and saw one I didn’t recognize. I clicked on it, and found a page where there are many, many of my entries, AS IF written by this blogger. There are other entries, too, from other bloggers, but no credit given to original sources.

It is so disgusting to me. It’s stealing not to give credit.

Spam for Today

Today, in my spam queue, some lotto ticket guy wrote:

Are you proud of your blog, because it’s a mess.

I know it was only spam, and I know he sent it to thousands of people, and that is how WordPress picked it up as spam. I KNOW it wasn’t personal. But my feelings feel hurt anyway! LLOOLL at myself.

Photo tools

Technical issue – Yousef – this is what I see in my “gallery” when I select a photo. Is this what you see? Where are the tools? How do you resize from here?

Raising Blog Interest

I like WordPress – even if things go wrong from time to time, it is because they are trying something new. They work out the bugs, they move forward.

In an announcement today, called Possibly an Announcement they talk about putting some references at the bottom of each post which, if you liked this post, will take you to other blogs with posts on similar subjects.

I don’t know how this will work, but I like it that they are coming up with new ways to increase blog traffic, and to allow readers to follow a theme. You can read the entire announcement by clicking on the blue type, above.

Blog posts can be a total tease. You get to the end and you’re ready for more, but all that’s there is maybe some post navigation, and if you’re lucky a few comments. If your appetite was whetted by the awesome post you just read there’s no place for you to go, except maybe to a search engine to look for terms around what you just read.

Post or permalink pages probably account for about half of the pageviews on your blog.

One of my favorite things about Youtube is that you can start with a single video and then see something else interesting in the related videos and you lose yourself and next thing you know it’s four in the morning and you’re watching disco pilates videos. My fancy term for this is lateral navigation. (Which the rest of the world seems to think has something to do with flying.)

Well now you can have that same experience across WordPress.com.

In a feature we’re calling possibly related posts we’ll now try to show posts related to yours a little section at the end. If we find any posts on your blog that are related, we’ll put those at the very top and in bold. Next we’ll show other posts from around WordPress.com, and finally we’ll check if there’s anything in the mainstream media.

The result is a handful of links that should provide you and your visitors something interesting to check out. On blogs that cover the same topics frequently related posts could cause a 5-10% increase in traffic overnight. You could also start to see traffic from lots of other blogs. It’s a bit of an experiment, and we’ll be tweaking it a lot based on your feedback and the data that we collect once everything is live.

Safari / WordPress Upload Image Hint

After several mornings of agony trying to upload my sunrise photo, only to be successful later in the day, I went to the FAQ section, where one little line gave me a clue for something else to try. It’s something about when you sign on, you might get one link or you might get another.

When uploading an image, if I see that they are using “Flash” I know it is going to work. If it says it is using “browser,” it is never going to work.

As cumbersome as it may be, what works for me is to sign out, and sign in again, hoping this next link will enable the “Flash” upload.

Bonus morning photo, just because I can:
