New Look at WordPress

On this very sleepy Saturday morning I am up a little late, grab my coffee settle in with my laptop while AdventureMan reads aloud to me from a book he is perusing, and after I take care of my e-mail, I check in the blog.

WHOA!

What is this?

Overnight, WordPress instituted a new, very elegant desktop. When I sign in, I have an overview, with a lot of information clearly presented (I can only “snap” a part of the new desktop:)

Writing a new post also has a totally new look. Most of the changes are intuitive; I have only had a little trouble understanding the photo-insertion process, which was also the hardest part for me in the old WordPress format:

All in all, a happy surprise for a quiet Saturday morning!

Kinky

My apologies to all the bloggers / commenters who got sent to SPAM last night, even regular, known commenters. I think WordPress is trying out some new things in the background (just my guess) and I am sure the situation will improve, but meanwhile – my apologies! I have noticed when you get sent to SPAM, it doesn’t even show up for maybe 24 hours – AAARRGGGHH!

WordPress Summarizes Referrers

I was just roaming around, and discovered that the Summarize feature is also working on Referrers, in WordPress. What an eye opener – see where the majority of your visitors have come from through the entire life of your blog!

You go to your Blog Stats page, click Referrers, and you will see a range of options, including Quarter and Life Time of the Blog. Click any for the summary of all your referrers. Amazing.

Oh wow. I just checked Search Engine Terms – it’s there, too, and they also have a summary by year! And in the Clicks section! (The all-time top click is for my niece, Little Diamond, followed by I Can Has Cheezburger.

Weekly Stats

The WordPress week goes from Monday to Monday, so I try to check my stats on Mondays, see how I am doing on a weekly basis. Now that I have learned how to take photos of things on my desk, I am a moster! I can do anything!

I was totally on a roll up to Christmas. Huge drop between Christmas and New Years, and then back up – and FLAT! Four weeks, each with almost exactly the same amount of readers. Have I hit my plateau?

Not Spam

My apologies this morning to UmmAdam, GreY, Mirror Polisher and Touche, all of whom left comments which I found in the spam section.

I DE-SPAMMED them, deleted all the ones that wanted to sell me Viagra and lengthen my penis and help me get a credit card, and then when I went to the Dashboard – the de-spammed comments weren’t there! I have looked everywhere.

I don’t know what is happening, why WordPress is not allowing commenters who have been active before, have never had a problem. Aaaarrrgh!

Yesterday and Today

Yesterday, as I was blogging early in the morning, everything suddenly went wonky and I discovered I was no longer blogging as the blogger, but as a guest. I did everything I could think of, and nothing worked. All day long, srom time to time I would try to log in and it would tell me I was not a valid user. I even changed passwords – nothing doing, the password was not the problem, I was the problem.

Finally, late last night just before bed, I could get on again. I was concerned whether I could get on today, but so far so good, only it doesn’t want to publish my posts. (and as a blogger, like what’s the point, if you can’t post???)

For my not-living-in-Kuwait readers, yesterday we had rain. I suspect rain may be part of the problem – rain has always screwed things up in Florida, in Seattle, in Germany . . .

Here is a photo of the gently falling rain on local vegetation:

Yeh, I don’t know why the sky looks sort of blue-green, it was really cloudy, but I was shooting toward the sea and maybe the sea reflected green on the clouds (?)

And here is the sunrise from this morning – all two seconds of it. It’s a good thing I was waiting with my camera, this is all I got:

Two seconds later, it was gone. Here is what we have now:

It seems to be brightening, even though we still have cloud cover. Kuwait is a dry country, and desperately needs the rain. This is the dryest, coldest rainy season in memory.

Rich WordPress Upgrade

Today WordPress announced a huge increase in free upload space: Free Space to Three Gigabytes.

“Today, one of those developments comes to fruition — everyone’s free upload space has been increased 60x from 50mb to 3,000mb. To get half that much space (1GB) at our nearest competitor, Typepad, you’d pay at least $300 a year. We’re doing the same thing for free.”

They also announced, important to people like me who like to illustrate heavily with photos, that if you bought a 1GB upgrade, it is now a 5GB upgrade, at no extra charge.

i iz blogginz / leef IÂ alonze
moar funny pictures

I upgraded when I got up to 75% capacity, but never even reached 1% or capacity yet. I feel like the (space) richest woman in the world today!

Sunrise and Widget

I wasn’t sure there was going to be a sunrise this morning, when I woke up and the sky was full of clouds and DARK! At around sunrise (I can check on Weather Underground Kuwait when that is going to happen) I started clicking. When I looked at my results, it looked like two different mornings, but it is all today, Saturday, January 18th, 2008.

Will we really have a sunrise?

I guess so! (5 minutes later)

I hope you have all noticed the new weather widget on my closest right hand column, giving the current temperature in Fahrenheit and Centigrade. After more than a year of blogging, it occurs to me that other people using WordPress have widgets from outside WordPress, so there MIGHT be a way. (Yeh, I’m slow, but I’m slow.) Now that I have figured out how to do that, I am getting all excited about maybe changing format. (Maybe around June; I have a list of things to get done first. 😉 )

One Year Today

happy_birthday_cake_05.jpg

(Photo above from a very cool website called Coolest Birthday Cakes.Com. Oops, no, it is not the 50th anniversary of this blog, only the 1st, but I love the cake!)

One year ago today, I gathered up every fragment of courage I could find and joined the blogging world. You can’t imagine how nervous I was. I had a lot to learn about WordPress to start, it was a steep learning curve.

I had done my homework. When moving to Kuwait, I discovered the information-rich world of blogs, and while trying to figure out what life in Kuwait might be like, also discovered several women bloggers I really liked: The Queen of Kuwaiti Bloggers Jewaira, a highly literate and often cleverly funny Alflaila / Zin / 1001 Nights, and a bravly funny MiYaFuSHi. Ladies, what I liked the very best about your blogs was that when I would go to the comments sections, I would learn all kinds of things, things I didn’t even know I didn’t know!

And the men – Don Veto(he has a sharp eye for inconsistencies), Hilaliya a Third Culture Kid with an entertainment/political/social issues blog, Skunk who talks about money and culture with irreverance and wit and enormous insight, and of course Purg whom I found scarily intimidating until I found out he was a sweetie-pie. There was also Gastronomica / the Equalizer who used to write lyrical and beautiful posts, but who opened his own restaurant and doesn’t seem to blog anymore.

Thank you all – you inspired me and helped me have the courage to jump in.

Zin, you most of all. I remember a post where you asked if you should even continue, that you knew there were a lot of viewers, but few responses, and boom! you got all kinds of responses! When you blog, you kind of put yourself out there, and that can be a little scary. You were an inspiration to me.

Thank you all, old friends and new, for making me so welcome. One year later, I feel like I have a whole new world of virtual friends. 🙂

When I started blogging, my niece, Little Diamond, was a frequent visitor, and just one short month later, she also started blogging. Then my nephew Earthling blogged for a while on the Google campus and the food there. My sister, Sparkle also blogs sporadically. And, just so you know, my Mom reads the blog, so I am very careful about language!

I hope you are having as much fun with Here, There and Everywhere as I am. I love the times you jump in and give me the information I need to answer those useless questions that buzz around in my head, like with the Yemeni Star. Now I know something new! I love it!

The only bad surprises I have had were the occasional nasty comment and the garbage bins full of spam. I have to go through the spam, and I try to do it quickly, to make sure good comments don’t get lost, but oh, what horrid stuff there is out there, and I am offended they would want to put it on MY blog. It makes my skin crawl!

As for the occasional nasty or aggressive comment – mostly, I let them stand. I figure it tells you more about the mentality of the commenter than anything about my blog. Some people just carry a lot of baggage, more to be pitied than condemned.

Thank you. My time here in Kuwait is so much richer for knowing you through your blogs, and for the good and bad times we share.

WordPress: Where Did Feedback Go?

When I first joined WordPress, there was a place you could click at the top of the page and write FeedBack. What was really really cool was that WordPress was small enough that you usually got an answer on the same day, even if your question was really stupid, like a lot of mine were, because I was just beginning.

There is a great FAQ place, but I couldn’t always understand the answers. Like you know when you know the meaning of each individual word, but when they are strung together, it might as well be an alien language from outer space, you just can’t get the meaning?

So today I wanted to give them some feedback – and FeedBack is GONE! They didn’t even say anything! It’s just gone! Or . . . . am I missing something? At the bottom of my dashboard, it says “use the feedback link at the top right of your page” but . . . am I going blind? I don’t see the feedback link anymore?

Here is what I want:

I love it that I can see statistics for each individual post. Some of my wierdest posts – like Tudo’s Vietnamese Restaurant in Pensacola written back in March can still get a high number of hits, and I like being able to see a post’s history.

And what I would really like is to be able to see ALL my posts in rank order by the number of hits. So like then I could see at a glance what my Top 10, Top 25 were, all time, through the history of the blog.

But . . .WordPress, you no longer want any feedback?
